The well-known comic-strip creator (Terry and the pirates, Steve Canyon, etc.) and his wife Esther ("Bunny") were, in the 1940's, neighbors and close friends of Kurt Weill and Lotte Lenya in New City, New York.

After Weill's death in 1950 and the Caniffs' move to Palm Springs, California, Lenya not only stayed in touch with them, but remembered them in her first will.
