Variant namesMethodist Episcopal Church, South missionary in China from 1884-1940, working chiefly in the Shanghai and Soochow (Su-chou shih) regions; instrumental in establishing several schools and involved in women's work; upon retirement in 1927, Atkinson received special permission to stay in China near Soochow, remaining through the Japanese invasion, ministering to the Chinese; left China in 1940; was buried there later; originally from Georgia; also called Jennie M. Atkinson.
