John Holt was an author of school and history books as well as agricultural surveys and articles for monthly magazines. He also collected materials for a history of Liverpool which he bequeathed to Matthew Gregson (1749-1824). Gregson was an antiquary but made his living as an upholsterer. He had a great interest in science and literature and collected documentary and pictorial information of Liverpool. Gregson published "A Portfolio of Fragments relative to the History of Antiquities of the County Palatinate and Duchy of Lancaster" based upon the contents of this collection.
