Queer Nation Milwaukee (Organization)

Hide Profile

The Milwaukee chapter of Queer Nation was founded by Tim Grair and Stan Straka in February 1991. Their activities promoted gay rights and awareness of issues in the gay community. Early activities included the Queer Shopping Network, pressuring gay politicians to come of the closet, and support of gay marriage. In 1991, Queer Nation organized a demonstration in reaction to the aftermath of the Jeffrey Dahmer case. They also convinced Colder's to pull advertising from Mark Belling's radio talk show in response to derogatory remarks he made against gays during the Dahmer case. In 1992, they campaigned against Mayor Norquist's veto of Pride Parade funding and boycotted United Way for its support of the Boys Scouts. They also campaigned against police harassment of gays on the UWM campus. Queer Nation Milwaukee was active in Milwaukee until December 1992.
