Cary, Patrick, active 1651
Variant namesPatrick Cary, poet (floruit 1651), was the younger son of Sir Henry Cary, 1st Viscount Falkland. His mother having converted to Catholicism, he was sent to France to be raised as a Catholic, and then spent twelve years in Italy under the patronage of Pope Urban VIII. He did not, however, take holy orders and returned to England in about 1650. It was not until 1820 that an edition of his poetry, edited by Sir Walter Scott, was published, although a small number of poems had been printed in 1771
