James M. Bateman was born in Pembrokeshire, Wales, on 10 July 1830, and died in Boulder, Colorado, on 6 October 1898. He came to Colorado in 1860, and moved to Boulder in 1861. He owned land on the Farmer's Ditch in Boulder; his farm was valued at $7,000 in the 1885 census. In 1890, he sold his farm for $9,500, and lived in Boulder from 1891 until his death in 1898. Most of that time, he stayed at the Brainard Hotel. He was buried in Columbia Cemetery, Boulder.

Bateman lived in Boulder town from 1891 until his death in 1898. He stayed at Brainard's Hotel until moving into a boarding house on Pearl Street on 16 March 1896. Bateman was buried in Columbia Cemetery, Boulder.

He lived alone, but interacted with numerous friends in the neighborhood. In 1890 he sold his farm for $9,500, and moved into town.

The 1880 and 1885 Boulder County (Colo.) census records list James M. Bateman. The 1880 census lists him as a widower, farmer, born in Wales in 1830. In 1885 he is listed again as a widower and farmer--born in England in 1829 and living in census enumeration district no. 1, which included Boulder, Lafayette, Louisville, Marshall, and surrounding rural areas.
