John Robert Cravens was born in Madison County Indiana on November 22, 1819. He graduated from Indiana University with an A.B. in 1840 and later with an A.M. at an unknown date. He was a lawyer and one of Indiana's leading statesmen. He edited the Madison Banner, an organ of the Whig Party. On February 1, 1844, he married Drusilla Lanier. They had eleven children. He died March 26, 1899.
