Hutchins taught at Oberlin Shansi Memorial School in Shansi, China during his years as an undergraduate. He returned to China around 1925 as an English instructor for the Yale-in-China educational project established in Changsha. From 1928 to 1939 Hutchins was a representative of the American Trustees of the Yale-in-China Association, but was forced to leave China in 1939 during the Japanese invasion. Having been appointed a member of the trustees in 1939, Hutchins served as vice-president (1939 - 1949) of the Association and in 1950 was made an honorary trustee for life. Following Hutchins's retirement from the Berea presidency in 1967, he returned to China as a representative of the Association, residing in Hong Kong from 1967 to 1970.
