Corporal Richard McWilliams was born on 10 November 1841 in Richland County, Illinois. He enlisted in the 98th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment on 5 August 1862, and was enrolled in Company B as a private. McWilliams and his regiment were mustered out on 27 June 1865. In February 1867, he married Susan Frances Brooks; they had five children. He had a farm near Bible Grove, Illinois. Richard McWilliams died on 18 December 1920 and was buried in Bible Grove Cemetery.
