Born in Chester County, N.C., Brown was a member of the Mississippi State Legislature (1835-1839); U.S. Representative (1839-1841); Governor of Mississippi (1844-1848); U.S. Senator (1854-1861); member of the Confederate Army and Confederate Senate (1862-1865). Brown County, Kansas is named for him.
