George A. McMath (1931-2007) was a Portland architect who is considered to be the father of the city's architectural preservation movement.
He was the grandson of Portland architect A. E. Doyle and worked as a young man in the offices of Pietro Belluschi. After receiving his degree in architecture from the University of Oregon in 1959, McMath became a leader in historic preservation, championing Portland's first landmark-preservation ordinance and founding the Portland Historical Landmarks Commission, of which he was chairman. His renovation projects in Portland include Union Station, Gus Solomon Courthouse, New Market Theater, and the U.S. Custom House, among others, as well as Multnomah Falls Lodge and several houses on Officer's Row in Vancouver, Wash.
