Lowell Observatory, an independent, nonprofit, astronomical research organization, was founded by Percival Lowell in Flagstaff, Arizona in 1894. Directors: Percival Lowell, 1894-1916; V.M. Slipher, 1916-1954; Al Wilson, 1954-1957; E.C. Slipher, 1958 (Acting); John S. Hall, 1958-1977; Art Hoag, 1977-1986; Jay Gallagher, 1986-1989; Robert Millis, 1989-1990 (Acting); Robert Millis, 1990-present. The will of Percival Lowell stipulates that there be a sole trustee and that the trustee be a direct descendant. Since Percival Lowell had no children, the line of trustees went to Percival's sister, Mrs. William Lowell Putnam. Trustees: Guy Lowell, 1916-1927; Roger Lowell Putnam, 1927-1967; Michael Lowell Putnam, 1967-1987; William Lowell Putnam, 1987-present.
