Alice Thornton (1626/7-1707) was the fifth child of Christopher Wandesford and Alice Osborne, both from prominent Yorkshire families. Her father was Lord Deputy of Ireland at the time of his death in 1640, after which her mother moved the family back to England. In 1651 Alice Wandesford married William Thornton, with whom she spent a financially straitened life. She bore nine children between 1652-1667, only three of whom survived to adulthood.
