House of Representatives, 1878-1882; S.C. Senate, 1882-1886; delegate, Democratic National Convention, 1880 and 1884; attorney general of South Carolina, 1886-1890; unsuccessful gubernatorial candidate, 1890; elected circuit judge, 1894; elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate and served from 4 Mar. 1897 until his death in Greenville, S.C., 20 May 1897.
