The Seismology Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (SIAN) was founded upon the base of uniting The Joint Seismological Commission and the Department of Seismology of The Institute for Physics and Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR on November 16, 1927 and abolished on June 12, 1947. The director: P. M. Nikiforov.
