Asa Battles was born in 1923 in Arizona with Cree heritage. He served in the United States Army during World War II and worked for many years in Denver. In the 1970s, he began to create art, including the illustrations for Jamake Highwater's book Ritual of the Wind. His art was well-renowned among Indigenous tribes in the western United States for its authenticity and representations of culture. Battles died in 2005 in Denver.
