John Malcolm (d.1634) was professor of Greek philosophy, St Leonard's College, University of St Andrews, then from 1591, minister of the East Church, Perth. Here he revised a protestation against episcopacy signed by himself and 41 other clergy during the Parliament at Perth in 1606. He wrote Commentarius in Apostolorum Acta, published in 1615, in the dedication of which he exhorted the king to pardon those ministers banished for holding an assembly in Aberdeen. He was summoned before the Court of High Commission for this action. He died 'a grave, godlie and learned Man'.

Francis Stewart (1562-1612), first earl of Bothwell, grandson of James V, nephew of Mary Queen of Scots, a skilled politician wielding great power at the Scottish court with his influence over James VI, involved in all the intrigues and military activities of the time. Eventually accused of treason by witchcraft, abandoned by his Protestant supporters when he took the money of the Catholic earls, and exiled to the continent.

From the guide to the John Malcolm, heads of lectures on dialectics, 1586, 1586, (University of St Andrews)
