Charles Lee, private of Company H of the 39th Regiment of New York Infantry (Garibaldi Guards). He enlisted in December 1863 when the company was organized from recruits (the original German, Hungarian, Swiss, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese companies recruited for three years in 1861 were discharged in June 1864). Lee was probably an Englishman: according to a note at the beginning of the diary, he had "joined Royal Artillery Feb. 22 1861 discharged Feb. 15 1863." The newly constituted regiment was attached to the 3rd, and and for a time in the Consolidated, Brigade, 1st Division, 2d Corps, Army of the Potomac. Lee received a flesh wound at the battle of Po River (1864, May 10) and spent three weeks at Finley Hospital in Washington, D.C. thus missing the battle of Cold Harbor. He returned to the regiment early June and fought in Petersburg campaign (1864, June 15 - 1865, Apr. 2).
