James Gibson Campbell was born 22 November 1896 in Saltcoats, North Ayrshire, Scotland. He matriculated into the medical faculty at the University of Glasgow , Scotland, in 1916 . The subjects he studied in his first 2 years are not known but in his third year he studied Materia Medica, Pathology, and Surgery. His final year studies consisted of Midwifery, Practice of Medicine, Clinical Medicine, and Opthamology. He graduated MB ChB in 1920 and achieved a Diploma of Public Health (DPH) from the University of Cambridge in 1922 . His father, David Birrell Campbell, also studied medicine at the University of Glasgow , graduating in 1892 with MB CM (see related material).
James died in Mauchline, East Ayrshire on 23 August 1977.
