E. Howard McCaleb Jr. graduated from Washington and Lee Law School in 1919 and was admitted to the bar in 1920. He practiced in his father's law firm (1920-1924), was assistant United States attorney for the eastern district for seven months in 1925, and served as judge of the Court of Appeals for Orleans Parish (1936-1941). McCaleb served on the Louisiana Supreme Court as a temporary member (1941-1943), associate justice (1947-1970), and chief justice (1971-1972).
