Thomas Rose Mills was educated at Berwick Grammar School and was admitted to Edinburgh University in 1885. A gifted classicist, he graduated with first class honours in 1889 winning two of the chief classical scholarships. He continued his studies at Wadham College, Oxford from where he graduated B.A. in 1893 and later received an M.A. He worked at Aberdeen University then became an assistant lecturer at Owens College, Victoria University, Manchester. In 1900 he became an assistant at St Andrews and the following year was appointed lecturer in Classics at University College, Dundee. He was promoted to reader in 1927 a post that he held until 1929.
