Loring family.
Jane Lathrop Loring, wife of Asa Gray, botanist and Harvard professor, was a member of the Female Humane Society of Cambridge and editor of Letters of Asa Gray. Her nieces, represented in this collection, were Katharine Peabody Loring, founder of and teacher in the Society to Encourage Studies at Home, and Louisa Putnam Loring, founder and president of the Aiken, South Carolina Sanitarium and the Beverly Anti-Tuberculosis Society. Both sisters worked for peace and with the American Red Cross.
