Oregon State Legislator Douglas E. Heider was born in Salem, Oregon in 1929. Upon graduation from Willamette University in 1956 with a degree in political science, Heider took over management of Heiders Appliance store from 1956 to 1962. In 1958, Heider won a seat in the state legislature as a representative from Marion County, serving two terms from January 1959 to January 1963. He served on the House Taxation, Natural Resources, Planning and Development, and Election committees. He became director of the Oregon Retail Council from 1963 to 1969. In 1969, he took a position with Portland General Electric Company, retiring in 1984. Heider then served as executive director of the Oregon Republican Party from 1985 to 1986.
