Whitehead, Joseph, 1867-1938
Variant namesWomen's fashion designer born in Portsmouth, Virginia. After graduating from the New York School of Design, he worked at Corbeau et Cie in the 1920's and from 1933 to 1942 co-owned Joseph Whitehead, Inc, a maker of high-priced afternoon, dinner, evening and wedding dresses. In the late 1940's he headed a division of Foxbrownie, Inc that specialized in upscale, ready-to-wear womenswear. He is remembered for his bridal gowns and "dinner-at-home" dresses.
