The Australian Humanities Research Council was founded in 1956 by a number of Australian scholars, supported by the Faculties of Arts in all Universities. It received recognition and financial support from the Federal Gov't and was based in the National Library of Australia. Its aim was to determine research policies for the various disciplines in the humanities and to implement the policies by grants of public monies. In 1969 the Council obtained a Royal Charter, thereby making it the Australian Academy of the Humanities.
