Arthur Robert Hogg was born and educated in Melbourne. He went to Canberra in 1929 to work with Dr Duffield at Mt Stromlo Observatory and, as an astronomer of world standing held several positions with the Observatory until becoming Deputy Director in 1963. He was acting Director of the Australian National University, Department of Astronomy at the time of his death. He was President of the Royal Society for Australia in 1954 and convenor for Australian National Committee in Astronomy for twelve years.
