Wheeler, George R.

Wheeler (June 28, 1891-Aug. 11, 1968) was born in Isabella County (Mich.). He earned a B.S. from MSU in 1914 and a M.A. from Teachers College, Columbia University (1930). Wheeler joined the Central Michigan University (CMU) faculty in 1914, and later headed the Dept. of Conservation and Agriculture. He championed conservation education and practices and was associated with a wide variety of city and state activities and organizations. Among the awards Wheeler received were: Outstanding Citizen of the Year (Mount Pleasant, Mich., Jan. 1968); an honorary Doctor of Laws (Eastern Mich. Univ., June 1968); and the 50th Anniversary Medal from the U.S. Pres. and Congress (1968). His wife, Elizabeth, was also a CMU faculty member, 1957-1970. Together they had two sons, George, Jr. and Richard. One of the CMU dormitories is named in his honor.
