Sergeant (SGT) James M. Uhler enlisted in the Army on 2 June 1857 for five years of service. He was assigned to the 10th Regiment, U.S. Infantry at Fort Leavenworth. In July, he was assigned to Company G and traveled with his unit to Utah Territory to put down the Mormon Uprising. Uhler arrived in Utah Territory in 25 September 1857. His unit remained in Utah until it was recalled to the East in August 1861. He arrived in Washington, D.C. on 19 October 1861. Uhler and his unit participated in the Spring 1862 campaigns. He completed his 5 years of service and was discharged from the 10th Regiment on 2 June 1862. On 17 August 1863, Uhler was drafted into Company I of the 149th Pennsylvania Volunteers. On 10 May 1864, he was wounded in the left arm and shoulder by a ball from an exploded shell. Uhler was sent to the Mansion House Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia. For almost a year, Uhler was alternately hospitalized and on light duty at various hospitals around Washington, D.C. He rejoined his unit at Elmira, New York on 6 May 1865. Uhler was mustered out on 24 June 1865.
