Ring family.

Hide Profile

Seattle family headed by peace activists Fred and Mabel Ring.

Fred and Mabel Ring and their daughter Eleanor (Ellie) were peace activists both before and after World War II. Eleanor was active in the University of Washington YMCA/YWCA, where she met Gordon Hirabayashi, a Quaker and conscientious objector. Hirabayashi was arrested in 1942 for a deliberate curfew violation. Tried and convicted in Seattle Federal District Court, he appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. The conviction was upheld in 1943 but overturned in 1986.
