The Nevada Commission on Tourism was created in 1983 consisting of 1) a division of tourism, and 2) a division of publications. The advertising program was directed primarily to consumers and the travel industry to stimulate interest in travel information and recreation in Nevada.

Nevada Magazine was established as Nevada Highways and Parkways in January, 1936, as the State's first regular effort to promote tourism. It focused on the natural attractions and significant developments in the state. Its publication was suspended during World War II, and resumed in 1946. In 1964 legislature approved the plan for the magazine to go commercial; in the mid-70's the Nevada was placed under the Department of Economic Development.
