William Rush Dunton, Jr. was a Pennsylvania native who came to Maryland as a psychiatrist and became a director of the Sheppard and Enoch Pratt sanitorium. In search of a form of occupational therapy to intrigue his patients, he set upon the activity of quilting. His interest as a medical professional soon became personal hobby, and for almost half a century he chronicled quilting from his adopted home state. Dr. Dunton amassed many documents and volumes in the course of his research and organized the materials painstakingly. Dunton's quilting collection has been at the Baltimore Museum of Art for an undetermined length, but at least since his death in 1966, now housed in the E. Kirkbride Miller Art Research Library; there is indication within the records that Dunton prepared them specifically for donation to this institution.
