The Maternal Association of St. Michael's Church in Bristol, Rhode Island, adopted a constitution in July 1836 and met monthly from at least December 1836-February 1839. The group provided advice and support for mothers in the church; some meetings were open to children under fifteen years of age. The society had two officers, a directress and a secretary. The officers often received guidance from male clergy.
