One of Richmond's most popular newspapers, the Richmond Enquirer was established in 1804 as The Enquirer. The title was changed to Richmond Enquirer in 1815. The original editors were Thomas Ritchie (1778-1854) and Claiborne W. Gooch. The Daily Richmond Enquirer was started in 1833, and the Weekly Richmond Enquirer, in 1855. In 1866 the Richmond Enquirer absorbed the Richmond Sentinel, and in 1876 the paper was combined with the Daily Richmond Examiner to form the Daily Enquirer and Examiner. In 1870-1873, the paper was published by the Richmond Enquirer Co., with George C. Wedderburn as the company's manager. In 1873 it was acquired by W. W. Berry & Co. who sold out next year to John H. Bryant. In 1876, the Enquirer Publishing Co. was formed. The paper changed hands several times before the publication was discontinued in 1877.
