The Governor's Office on Volunteerism is a statewide resource whose mission is to promote and support volunteerism in both private and public sectors.

Goals of the office include: to serve as an advocate regarding issues affecting volunteers, to communicate with and coordinate elements of the volunteer community, to train leaders, to encourage volunteer recognition, to strenghten volunteer programs, and to serve as an information clearinghouse on volunteerism.

The fifteen member Advisory Council, consisting of representives of public and private organizations and interested individuals appointed by the governor, advise, support, and evaluate policy and planning.

The Alabama Office of Volunteer Citizen Participation within the Commission on Aging formerly provided for the planning, development, and management of volunteer services. Established in 1984 by Executive Order 33, it was moved back to the governor's office around 1990.
