William F. Schadt was born in Prussia on September 15, 1845, and came to Galveston in 1848. He and his brother Charles Schadt joined the Lone Star Rifles in 1861, later known as Company L of Hood's Texas Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia of the Confederate States of America. Charles Schadt was killed May 7, 1862, at the battle of Eltham's Landing. William Schadt was wounded in the battles of Chicamauga, The Wilderness, and Darbytown. He returned to Galveston and engaged in the lumber business, purchasing a lumber yard from W. F. Stewart & Co. in 1888. William Schadt married Emma Ida Keller; they had five children, Charles, Lillian, Myrtle, Ewald, and William. William F. Schadt died October 7, 1917, and was buried in Lake View Cemetery in Galveston.
