In 1955 a worldwide survey was conducted by George W. Platzman of the University of Chicago's Department of Meteorology. The purpose of the survey was to assess the status of work in the field of numerical weather prediction, and this information was to be used in a course on numerical forecasting theory. The survey collected data relating to the use of computers in numerical forecasting, research in graphical methods of forecasting, and plans of universities and government agencies for engaging in numerical prediction research. A final report was distributed on June 12, 1956.
