Courses in journalism at the University of North Carolina were taught in the Department of English beginning in 1909. In 1924, the Department of Journalism was established. In 1950, it became the School of Journalism. The school was renamed School of Journalism and Mass Communication in 1990 to reflect the expanded scope of its curriculum. The study of journalism at the University of North Carolina began in 1909, when the first journalism class was taught in the Department of English.
