Robert Haynes Terrill (1910-1992) was born in Faneuil, Massachusetts, and attended the Worcester Polytechnic Institute briefly before receiving an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. He would graduate in 1932 with a commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry. In July, 1932, he was assigned to the Army Air Corps and attended flight school at Kelly Field, Texas. In 1934, he was permanently transferred to the Air Corps. Throughout the 1930s, he served as a pilot and as an operations officer with several outfits in the western United States and in Hawaii. During World War II, he commanded and led to overseas operations several flight outfits. His wartime service included command roles with the 382nd Bomb Group, 445th Bomb Group, the 2nd Air Division, and eventually, the 8th Air Force in Europe. After the war he was assigned to Tokyo, Japan, and Washington, D.C., where he served as Deputy Chief of Military Studies for the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey. In July, 1946, he became an instructor at the Air War College, and in August, 1947, became Chief of Staff for Operations at the Air University at Maxwell AFB, Alabama. Terrill commanded the 93rd Bomb Wing at Castle AFB, California from 1948 until 1951, including when it was deployed to the United Kingdom in 1950. He flew combat missions in the Korean Conflict, and served as Commanding General of the Far East Air Forces Bomber Command from May to September, 1951. Returning to the U.S. in October, he was appointed Deputy Commander of the 15th Air Force at March AFB, California, and later served briefly as its commander. Throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s, Terrill was assigned to numerous command roles around bases in the U.S., including with the Strategic Air Command, the Air Proving Ground Center of the Air Research and Development Command, and the Air Defense Command. He retired from active duty on July 1, 1964. General Terrill's career decorations included the Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star Medal, the Air Medal, the Distinguished Service Medal, and the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster. Foreign decorations included the French Croix de Guerre with palm.
