Author and illustrator of children's books and developer of Random House's division of Beginner Books.

Dr. Seuss was born as Theodor Seuss Geisel in Springfield, Mass. on 2 March 1904. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1925, where he had been editor of the campus humour magazine "Jack-o-Lantern." In 1937, Geisel published his first book, "And to think that I saw it on Mulberry Street," which was followed by 14 more books over the next twenty years. In 1957, he published his most famous book, "The cat in the hat," which was in part a reaction to John Hersey's complaint in a 1954 Life Magazine article that the primers used to teach reading were dull and repetitious. "The cat in the hat" was followed by 47 more books before Seuss's death in La Jolla, Calif., in 1991.
