Buchanan was born in Paris, Tenn. in 1928. He was ordained into the Baptist ministry in 1952 and served as pastor of churches in Virginia, Tennessee, and Alabama from 1952-1964. Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1964 as a Republican from Alabama's 6th District, Buchanan was a member of Congress from 1965-1980.
