Peters, William, fl. 1794.
In the 1790's, an attempt was made by the federal government to attain peace with the indigenous peoples that also claimed the region of Kentucky and its initial Old Northwest Territory. Unsuccessful in its intial efforts, General Anthony Wayne ("Mad Anthony"), was then appointed to replace General St. Clair as head of the regular forces in 1972. Wayne proceeded to mount an effort to suppress those hostile tribes. The 1794 victory at the Battle of Fallen Timbers and the subsequent treaty with the North-western Indians at Greenville, Ohio, established an unbroken peace until 1812.
