Dr. Arthur A. Durand was an Air Force officer who served more than 28 years and was assigned intelligence and command duties which also included six years in the History Department at the Air Force Academy. His research into the history of Stalag Luft III began in 1973 and took thirteen years to complete. "Stalag Luft III: The Secret Story" was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, selected as an Alternate Selection for the History Book Club, and is generally regarded as the definitive work on the camp. After retiring from the Air Force, Col. Durand continued to teach history in Omaha, Nebraska, and made regular presentations to numerous academic and civic audiences.
