Founded in 1837, the Philanthropic Society is one of the oldest student organizations on the Davidson College campus. Along with the Eumenean Society, the Philanthropic Society hosted debates, awarded medals, created a library, invited speakers to campus, arranged commencement activities, and helped to provide activity to an otherwise isolated campus. Philanthropic Hall was built in 1850 and remains an important architectural features on campus. The society's motto is "verit, sans peur," meaning "truth without fear."
