Joshua Hill Foster, son of James and Mary Ellen Hill Foster, was born on 17 March 1819 in Tuscaloosa County. He was educated in the schools of Tuscaloosa County and graduated at the head of his class from the University of Alabama in 1839. Over his lifetime, he was a tutor, a teacher, a professor, a college president, and a Baptist minister.
On 26 December 1843, Foster married Lucy Bolling, daughter of Dr. Clement and Sarah Lane Billingslea; the couple had one daughter, Lucie Billingslea. Lucy died in 1847, and Foster remarried on 24 February 1853 to Frances Cornelia Bacon. The couple had six children: Clement C.; Edwin Hardy; Henry Bacon; Joshua Hill, Jr.; Thomas J.; and Sumner B.
Foster died in Tuscaloosa, on 28 February 1904.
