Frederic Coleman Murphy was born in Bangor, Maine, January 26, 1907, the son of William J. and Mary Coleman Murphy. He was a member of the class of 1928 at the University of Maine, received his master's degree in education from the university in 1936 and a master of arts in economics from Harvard in 1938. He taught at the high school in Berlin, N.H. until becoming an economic analyst in the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce in the Dept. of Commerce in Washington, D.C., resigning in 1943 to enlist in the Army. After serving briefly in North Africa, he was transferred to duty in Italy with the Allied Control Commission. He was killed in a traffic accident in Italy in 1945.
