Barber, Alonzo George, 1857-1922.
Alonzo George Barber was born the son of George and Rebecca Louisa Ramon Barber on February 26,1857 at Ft. Supply, Wyoming. His father had emigrated from England in 1850, having joined the Mormon church several years previously. His mother Rebecca was George's second wife. Born in Addison County, Vermont, her family moved soon after to New York, then to Nauvoo, Illinois in 1836. After the expulsion from Nauvoo the family moved to Salt Lake City where she married George Barber. They moved to Ft. Supply in 1855.
In 1869 George moved his two wives (Adaline Hatch and Rebecca Louisa Ramond) and young son Alonzo George to a log house in Smithfield Utah, and in another 3 years to a large house at 170 North Main.
A.G. learned responsibility early in life as he and his brothers Walter and Herbert took over the management of a quarter section of land that belonged to their father. They put a house on the land, followed by irrigation, culinary water and other necessities.
His father organized the first implement store in Cache Valley and gave his sons responsibilities in it. George Barber & Sons was a successful venture, and later Herbert started his own implement store in Cardston, Alberta, Canada, later returning to Logan in 1907. He set up another implement store in Logan. A.G. and his brother also organized a cattle ranching outfit in Star Valley, Wyoming and were great helps in financing for other ambitious ranchers in the area.
A.G. became a leader in the community, church, business, education, and banking. He moved to Logan and became a director in the Cache Valley Bank, later in charge of the Lewiston State Bank. He also served as President and manager of the Union Knitting Mills in Logan.
His schooling started with the public schools in Smithfield where his father was a teacher, later attending the Brigham Young College and Utah State Agricultural College. Alonzo George Barber's life ended quietly on December 10th, 1922 at Logan, Utah.
