James Tillinghast Archer was born in 1819, in the Parish of St. Luke, in Beaufort District, South Carolina, and moved to Florida with his family in 1835. He was a lawyer who served the state of Florida as attorney general, comptroller and the first secretary of state, from 1845-1848. He died on June 1, 1859. The town of Archer, Florida, is named in his honor.
