W.L. Scheding (1883-1947), a pastor ordained by the General Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the U.S., served as a member of the NLC's European Commission, a group of NLC representatives who traveled throughout Europe assessing the needs and problems of Lutheran churches and their people after the events of World War I. Scheding traveled through Russia from 1922-1923 in an effort to bring relief to Lutherans in that country. He also served as a member of Col. William Haskell's Staff of the Amerinca Relief Administration. In 1925, Scheding accepted the pastorate of Mt. Tabor Church, Syracuse, New York, a position he held until a few months before his death in 1947.
