Carnes, Edwin Osgood

Edwin Osgood Carnes was born in France on April 15, 1831, the son of Americans Francis and Emma Osgood Carnes. After attending the Naval School (later the United States Naval Academy) at Annapolis, Maryland, he entered the navy as a midshipman and served on board several ships that sailed along the South American coast; he also traveled to Japan in the 1850s. He and his wife, Sarah Strong Weeks, married on March 31, 1857, and had two children: Harriet and Edwin Francis. Edwin Osgood Carnes died in March 1860.
