James A. Cutts was born in Liverpool, England, on September 29, 1943. He graduated with a B.A. in Physics from Cambridge University in 1965, and went on to earn a M.S. (Geophysics, 1967) and Ph.D. (Planetary Sciences, 1971) from California Institute of Technology (Caltech). From 1967 to 1975, Cutts worked at Caltech and periodically at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). From 1968-69, he was in the Space Instruments Section at JPL, and from 1970-71 and 1972-74, he was in the Science Data Analysis Section. As a manager of the Planetary Science Institute of Science Applications International Corporation from 1975-82, Dr. Cutts was a member of the Mariner 9 and Viking Orbiter Imaging Teams.
